Wednesday's Wonderful Collection - Leslie Family Papers, MS.00115

Samuel Leslie was born in Barren County, Kentucky on October 25, 1809. He moved to Searcy County, Arkansas, in 1838 from Tennessee and homesteaded 160 acres of land near Cove Creek. In Arkansas, he served five terms in the Arkansas Legislature. During the Civil War, he served as a colonel in the Arkansas militia and a captain in the Confederate army.

A.J. Leslie, Sr., Samuel's son, was born in July of 1834 in Tennessee. He married Sarah Parks. After Sarah's death, he married her sister, Melinda Parks. A.J. and Melinda Leslie moved to Wiley's Cove in 1886, where he became the postmaster. Wiley's Cove was later renamed Leslie Post Office. The town of Leslie, Arkansas, was incorporated on February 9, 1903.
