Wednesday’s Wonderful Collection - Henry Loewer papers, MS.000833

Henry Loewer was one of the early rice farmers in Arkansas. He was born in Lutzel, Germany, on October 5, 1864, came to the United States when he was 18, and went to Baltimore, Maryland. There, he married Margaret Weigand. He came to Arkansas in 1908 and settled in Lonoke, where he started rice farming and helped in the organization of the Lonoke Rice Milling Company. In 1911, he moved to a location near Wheatley, where he operated what was known as the Penrod Prouty and Loewer Rice Farm. He had two daughters, Lydia and Lottie, and a son, Charles F. W. Loewer. He was a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, since its organization, a member of the State Baptist Executive Board, and a member of the Wheatley Masonic Lodge. He died on November 29, 1938.
This collection contains personal and business correspondence of Henry Loewer. It also contains various material related to his rice business such as receipts, invoices, and advertisements, as well as material related to his work with the Baptist Hospital Board and the State Baptist Executive Board.
