The AHPP began documenting ghost signs of
Arkansas in the 1990s. The project culminated in an exhibit called "Ghost
Signs of Arkansas: Off-The Wall Relics, which debuted at the Old State House
Museum in 1994. The exhibit featured photographs by Jeff Holder and text by
Cynthia Haas, both employed by the AHPP. Fading signs from locations all over
Arkansas were featured including Trumann, Fordyce, Conway, Pine Bluff,
Prescott, and more. In 1997, The University of Arkansas Press issued a
publication called Ghost Signs of Arkansas, which expanded on the exhibit. The
exhibit stayed in the offices of the Arkansas Senate for several years before
going into storage.
This collection contains photographs and
negatives taken for the Ghost Signs of Arkansas exhibit produced by the
Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. It also includes correspondence and
articles related to the project.
