Lawrence County Bicentennial Celebrated

The AHC and NEARA marked the bicentennial of the creation of Lawrence County On Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, in Powhatan with a day-long symposium titled “Erasing Boundaries: Lawrence County at 200.” The symposium featured 12 speakers presenting on a variety of topics pertaining to Lawrence County’s earliest history. The event was funded by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Department of Arkansas Heritage. 

The AHC Kicks Off the New Year with New Research Room Technology

As of January 1, the AHC is offering a variety of options to researchers for obtaining copies of materials held at its three locations. Researchers will now be able to scan and save images from the AHC’s microfilm collection on select machines in the AHC research room in Little Rock. Flash drives can be purchased at the AHC Research Room desk for $5.75 per 2GB drive. Additionally, the AHC is adding new media duplication services for film and sound recordings. At the SARA and NEARA branches researchers will only be able to scan documents, but we hope to add the new equipment for scanning film in the near future.

Black History Commission News

The Black History Commission of Arkansas and the Arkansas History Commission will be hosting a symposium on Saturday, February 7, at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The symposium’s theme, “The Roots of African American Education in Arkansas,” will feature speakers, Peggy Lloyd, Dr. Joseph Hale, Amanda L. Paige and Gwendolyn Twillie. Topics will include Ila

Upchurch, the history of the Colored Industrial Institute, the Jeanes Teacher Program, and a living history presentation about the life of Charlotte Stephens.

From the Director

This month, as we inaugurate a new governor, we should consider that Arkansas has had 46 governors who have all given inaugural addresses. The first governor of the State of Arkansas, James Sevier Conway, had to delay his inauguration due to the fact that the Capitol building (now known as the Old State House) was not finished in time for him to take the oath of office. In September 1836, various dignitaries escorted Governor Conway to the main chamber of the state Capitol building. Governor Conway entered the House of Representatives chamber and, flanked by the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate, addressed those gathered in the House chamber. “The date of our existence, as a free and independent State, has commenced,” Conway told those gathered. The Arkansas History Commission holds many of the papers of the state’s governors.

Wednesday's Wonderful Collection - Hotze Family Papers, MS.000167

Peter Hotze was born October 12, 1836, at Innsbruck in the Austrian Tyrol and died April 12, 1909, in Little Rock.  He was the son of Wolfgang Reinart Hotze and Mary Sophia Hotze.  In 1856, he came to the United States and settled in Little Rock early in 1857, where he engaged in the general merchandise business.  He was a member of the Capital Guards, which became Company A of the Sixth Arkansas regiment of General Cleburne's division during the Civil War.  After the war, he formed a partnership with John Gould and entered the cotton and general merchandise business.  Hotze had a business and resided in New York, New York from 1873 until 1900, when he returned to Little Rock. 

In 1868, Peter Hotze married Johanna Krause.  They had three children, Sophia (Mrs. Robert D'orsay Wooldridge), Fredrick, and Clara (wife of Colonel James Villard Heidt).  Peter Hotze had two brothers, Frederick and Conrad L. Hotze.  Frederick Hotze was a field marshal of the Austrian empire and was governor of the military province of Bosnia in Austria.  He died in 1900.  Conrad L. Hotze was a prominent attorney in Cleveland, Ohio.  He died January 27, 1913.

Sophia Hotze (Mrs. Robert D'orsay Wooldridge) and Robert D'orsay Woolridge had a daughter, Laura D'orsay Wooldridge, who attended Little Rock High School in 1921 and 1922.  Mrs. Sophia Hotze Wooldridge was a member of the following: City Federation of Woman's Clubs in Little Rock, Woman's City Club, Aesthetic Club and the Fine Arts Club of Arkansas.  She was a member of these clubs during the 1920s and 1930s.

Miss Clara Hotze (Mrs. James Villard Heidt) was a member of the Little Rock Garden Club (1952-1953).

The collection consists of correspondence; Civil War related materials dealing with the Capital Guards, United Confederate Veterans, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the United Sons of Confederate Veterans; legal documents pertaining to land, court cases and businesses; books; sheet music; postcards; receipts; ribbons; stock certificates; newsclippings; fire insurance certificates, and other miscellaneous materials.

Digital Collections Has New URL

The Arkansas History Commission is announcing a new url for the agency’s online digital archives.  The url, http://ahc.digital-ar.org/ , will direct patrons to a variety of digitized collections of archival material.

The online digital archives was relaunched last year through the Online Computer Library Center’s (OCLC) program, Content DM. Content DM is used by archives and libraries across the country to share digitized archival material online. 

Digitized collections currently include World War I/Camp Pike material, all five Arkansas Constitutions, historic maps and postcards, material from Arkansas’s multicultural heritage, music clips from our Ozarks Folk Life and Culture collection, the history of the Arkansas state flag, Arkansas History Commission resource guides and educational lesson plans. 

Future collections will contain material pertaining to Arkansas women’s history, Arkansas sports, religion and spirituality in Arkansas, the 1927 Flood, World War II oral histories, and in celebration of the AHC’s 110^th anniversary this year, the agency will have a digital collection of 110 unique things picked by its staff.

The Arkansas History Commission, located in Little Rock, is the official state archives of Arkansas and maintains the largest collection of historical materials on Arkansas in the world.

MLK Day

The Arkansas History Commission will be closed this coming Monday, January 19th, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.

SAAR Event

The Society of Arkansas Archivists and Registrars will be having its first official professional networking mixer for group members at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12 at Cajun's Wharf in Little Rock. It will be a casual dinner and drinks event.
