Enoch
K. Miller was born January 16, 1840, in London, England. He came to
America with his family in 1844, settling in Rochester, New York. He
fought in the Civil War, serving in Company F, 108th Regiment, New York
Volunteers, until he was severely wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg.
After recovering from his wound, Enoch returned to New York and became a
Presbyterian minister. He returned to the army as a chaplain, serving
in the 25th Regiment, United States Colored Troops in Florida. It was in
Florida that Enoch began his work with the Freedmen's Bureau.
In 1867, during Reconstruction, he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Education for Arkansas under the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, more commonly known as the Freedmen's Bureau. He was also appointed Missionary Superintendent for Arkansas by the American Missionary Association. While in Arkansas, Enoch organized, built, and supervised many churches and schools. The churches were funded and operated by the American Missionary Association. The schools were operated by the Freedmen's Bureau, and received partial funding from the American Missionary Association. Enoch became an Episcopalian in Little Rock. He married Fanny Martha Jeffreys of Wisconsin, February 10, 1867. The couple left Little Rock in 1868. Enoch continued to devote his life to the church until his death on December 30, 1903.
